Who aligners may help
Aligners can correct many of the same problems as braces, such as:
- Mild to moderate crowding
- Gaps between teeth
- Some bite problems
- Teeth that have moved again after earlier orthodontic treatment
More complex tooth movements may be better suited to fixed braces. This is assessed at a consultation.
What aligners aim to do
Like braces, aligners straighten the teeth and improve how they fit together. Because they are clear and removable, many adults prefer them for their appearance and because they can be taken out to eat and to brush.
What to expect
Aligner treatment is planned from detailed records of your teeth. In general, it involves:
- An examination and records such as X-rays, photographs and a scan or impressions of your teeth
- A treatment plan showing how your teeth are expected to move
- Receiving your aligners, with instructions on how long to wear each set
- Regular check-ups to review your progress
- Retainers at the end of treatment to help hold your teeth in position
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes bonded to the teeth to help the aligners grip and move them.
Things to consider
- Aligners only work while you wear them. They usually need to be worn for most of the day and night, often around 20 to 22 hours a day.
- They should be taken out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water.
- Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in, so food is not trapped against your teeth.
- Aligners are not suitable for every type of tooth movement. Your dentist will explain whether they are right for you or whether braces may work better.
When to see a dentist
Book a consultation if you would like straighter teeth and want to know whether aligners could work for you. If an aligner cracks, gets lost or stops fitting properly, contact the clinic before moving on to the next set.
Questions about clear aligners
Are clear aligners noticeable?
Aligners are made from clear plastic, so they are much less noticeable than metal braces, although they can be seen up close.
How many hours a day do I need to wear aligners?
Most aligner treatment needs them to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, to drink anything other than water and to clean your teeth.
Can I eat with aligners in?
No. Take them out to eat and to drink anything except plain water, then brush your teeth before putting them back in.
Are aligners better than braces?
Neither is better for everyone. Aligners are removable and less visible, while braces are fixed and can manage a wider range of tooth movements. The right choice depends on your teeth and bite.
